Jesuit set designs
Exhibition in the Budapest History Museum
Buda Castle Building E
Open: 26th of March 2011. – 25th September 2011
The Baroque stage designs are documents of prime importance in the World's cultural heritage. From 1619 to 1773, when the order was dissolved, the Jesuits regularly held theatrical performances at first in Latin and later in Hungarian, German, and Slovakian. In terms of scenography the performances were spectacular as shown by the set designs, which were possibly made between 1676 and 1720. The allegorical figures in the drawings refer to the subject and theme of the Baroque theatre performances. Thus, these decorations are the authentic documents of the artistic, cultural and theatrical history of the period, which have so far not been treated in a wide context. The collection is unique. Throughout Europe approximately 15-20 specimens of Jesuit set design are available and there are 106 pieces in the scenographic collection of the Hungarian Theatre Museum and Institute. Until 1726 the designs still belonged to the Jesuit Order. They were later transferred from the Storno family in Sopron to the collection of our museum at the end of the 1960s.
