Following a long-overdue renovation, the medieval Albrecht Cellar and its exhibitions will be open to the public once again.

Undisturbed since 1967, the interiors contain multiple layers of architectural periods: the base is the medieval cistern of the royal palace in which pillars and arches were set up during the Baroque period. In order to preserve the medieval masonry, the walls could neither be chiseled, nor could they be dismantled, so the renovation posed a great challenge to the designers and contractors involved in the project.

In addition to the interiors, a part of the exhibition was also renewed: the introductory part commemorates the modern restoration of the palace and its designer, architect László Gerő, followed by a presentation of the history of the water supply system of the palace and the city. Finally, visitors will be able to view a variety of northern Italian style ornamental bricks used to decorate the buildings, whose existence proves that, contrary to popular belief, King Matthias was not the first and only ruler to follow Italian examples and employ Italian masters to build a royal residence in Buda.
