The Budapest History Museum is organizing an exhibition in 2021 about an international humanitarian aid campaign during which more than 60,000 children traveled abroad to gain back their strength, both physically and mentally, after the ordeals of war.
The year 2020 will remain memorable for everyone in many ways. The worldwide pandemic has swept away many historical commemorations and various other events. This is also the case with our temporary exhibition commemorating THE CHILDREN’S TRAINS, the international humanitarian aid campaign launched 100 years ago, in 1920. Originally planned to open in November this year, the exhibition is organized jointly by the Budapest History Museum and the Department of Dutch Studies at Eötvös Loránd University. Already during the planning process, the organizers knew that it might be necessary to postpone the event. Now we are preparing for the opening in the autumn of 2021, a year later, but in virus-free conditions. This way we can commemorate in a worthy manner this little-known event, which is significant for the history that Hungary shared with the partner countries involved in the relief operation, especially the Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland, following World War I. It is an event that has built lasting bridges between countries and people.
